Sobji Dal

In many food groups, people asks for "Sobji Dal". I often prepare this dal, as this is a comfort food. But always forget to take pictures of this. But today when I was making this, determind to take pictures of it and post its healthy but tasty recipe. This dal can be served with either Rice or Roti/Chapati. This recipe has been adopted from my mom, who often make this dal for me with rice and serves with Fried Eggplant. I just love this "Sobji Dal" from my mom's hand. Here is the recipe.

Sobji means "Vegetable". Vegetables are called Sobji in Bengali language. Sobji Dal is, when Mung Dal or Small Yellow Lentil is cooked with chopped vegetabes. This is a very healthy and comfort food. This dal can be served to any aged person. In winter, there are lots of fresh vegetables are available in the market, like carrot, cauliflower, green peas, beans etc. They tastes so good and healthy too. This dal is cooked with the winter's fresh vegetables.

Preperation steps for Sobji Dal

  Take a pressure cooker, add 1 drop of oil into it, heat the cooker. Now add the dal and dry roast it. Wash the dal under cold water, add fresh water and pressure cook the dal upto 2 whistles. Turn of the heat and let the pressure release itself. Now heat oil in a pan, first fry the chopped coconut and keep aside. Now fry the chopped vegetables and keep aside. In the remaining oil, add bay leaf, cumin seeds, red chili and fry till 10 seconds. Add chopped ginger, hing & turmeric powder into the pan. Do not fry the turmeric, otherwise it will get burnt. Add the fried vegetables & tomatoes to the pan. Fry for a while. Now add the boiled dal and 1 cup water to the pan and let everything to boil for 10 minutes. Cover it and simmer the heat. After 10 minutes, open the lid, adjust salt & sugar, sprinkle garam masala powder, ghee and again cover and let it stand for 10 minutes before serving. Serve the dal with Fried Chopped Coconut on the top. (this is totally optional) Enjoy "Sobji Dal" with Rice and fried Eggplant....

Serve the "Mixed Vegetable Dal" with Steamed Rice Or Roti & Fried Eggplant  & Papad.
